THE ART OF BEING
I’ve always been different.
“You like country music? You’re not black enough.”
“You’re not feminine enough.”
“You need to find a man and keep him happy.”
“You can’t like boys and girls.”
As if I haven’t gone through the same struggles.
As if I have not been black my entire life.
Or a girl
I can not change who I am.
And trust me, I have no desire to.
I am proud of who I am
Of how far I have come
You cannot climb a mountain by dragging others down.
You cannot escape a box while trying to contain others.
Do not force your insecurities onto others.
Do not attempt to poison others with the same venomous words that have been spoken to you.
And most of all, be proud of who you are.
Of how far you’ve come.
Success is not determined by how much money you make.
Or how famous you’ve become.
Success comes from within.
From knowing yourself.
From giving your identities space to breathe.
And yourself the room to simply,
